Gustav Klimt, Koloman (Kolo), Moser, les architectes Otto Wagner, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Adolf Loos et Josef Hoffmannn comptent parmi les artistes viennois les plus importants du début du siècle qui donnèrent naissance à l'art autrichien du XXe siècle. Grâce aux multiples facettes de son talent, Kolo Moser devint une figure centrale de ce cercle. Comme graphiste, il collabora à l'élaboration de l'image de la revue sécessionniste "Ver Sacrum" et établit des règles qui firent de cette publication d'artistes une œuvre d'art totale de petit format. Les aménagements d'expositions, d'espaces et ses décors de théâtre prouvent sa volonté de soumettre l'environnement au "façonnement" artistique. En qualité d'enseignant à la Kunstgewerbeschule, Moser s'engagea en faveur de la renaissance moderne de l'artisanat d'art. C'est également de l'école d'art de Vienne la plus importante de l'époque que partirent les impulsions de Moser pour la fondation du "Wiener Werkstätte" qu'il put fonder en 1903 avec Josef Hoffmann et Fritz Wärndorfer. Cette idée d'une entreprise de production commune entre artistes et artisans d'art représente la contribution viennoise la plus importante des premières décennies du XXe siècle en matière d'art sur le plan international. Le travail étroit entre Moser et Hoffmann - il est prouvé qu'ils s'influencèrent mutuellement, ainsi que l'art décoratif de Gustav Klimt - et sa collaboration avec Otto Wagner mettent l'accent sur l'éventail de ses idées et son grand charisme. Vitraux, projets de timbres-poste et imprimés lui assurèrent également une grande renommée auprès du public. Il consacra ses dernières années à la peinture, domaine dont il travailla plusieurs tendances pour tenter de formuler une nouvelle synthèse. Ce livre qui s'appuie sur l'évolution du domaine des arts à Vienne et les tendances internationales en faveur du renouveau de l'artisanat d'art, rend hommage à un artiste aux talents multiples de la Vienne du début du siècle.
